How to opt out of CheckPeople

Checkpeople is one of many, many data broker sites sharing invasive personal data that originates from public records. This site used to have a quick and easy automated opt out option which they replaced with a USPS opt out requiring 60 days that never worked for me. Then they allowed an automated opt out again but I’ve had to do a lot of follow up to get checkpeople to follow through with their automated opt out and this has been frustrating. As such, I’m conflicted about sharing this tutorial but I’m sharing it anyway because I think that if opting out becomes problematic for enough people, we can rally together to get checkpeople to become more consistent with their opt outs.

It doesn’t take long to do the opt out so please give it a shot and then report back in a comment.

1. To begin, click CheckPeople Opt Out, enter your full name and then click “Search.”

  • If you have a common name that returns too many results, search again and this time add your state, and even your city if you need to narrow the results down further.

Start with general information and add specifics as needed

2. Once you locate your information, click the red “Opt Out” button.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Many people have more than one record on this site. You will need to repeat all steps for each record you locate.

3. Enter your email address, check the “I’m not a robot” box and then click the “SEND CONFIRMATION EMAIL” button.

4. Go to your email account click on the “Confirm Request” button in the email you receive from checkpeople.

NOTE: If you don’t get an immediate confirmation email, check your  junk/spam folder.

5. To finalize your request, enter your name and check the box telling them if you’re opting yourself out or someone else. Then click the “COMPLETE REQUEST” button.

You must complete this step to opt out successfully

6. Repeat the tutorial from Step 1 for all additional records that belong to you. Be sure to look for misspellings of your name and for maiden and married names for women. (Even if a spouse’s name was not legally taken.)

7. You will receive an email from checkpeople after they process your removal. Once you get that email, be sure to confirm your information has actually been removed from the site by searching for yourself on CheckPeople.

NOTE: Allow as long as 30 days for Checkpeople to process your removal(s) and if your information remains on the site after 30 days, contact checkpeople for assistance. You can call them at 800-267-2122 or email them at support[at]checkpeople.com (substitute @ for [at]) If you do not have success after that, please mention that in a comment following this tutorial and we will band together to make sure that checkpeople honors its opt outs.

If you’re reading this tutorial, you likely want to remove your information from other sites as well. To access my other free tutorials, go to https://what-is-privacy.com/category/opt-out-2/. Alternatively, reach out if you don’t want to do your own removals and you’d like an estimate for me to remove you from all sites listed as well as a whole lot more.

Until next time, … Stay Cyber Safe.

I asked Checkpeople.com to remove my listing (showing age, birth year, address, etc) twice via support(at)checkpeople(dot)com. The 2nd request included their confirmation email, the url of my online listing, and when it would be completed. To date, I have not heard from them.

I did everything as Anoyomous (10/1/2019) suggested. My two requests were dated 9/14/2021 and 10/07/2021, so I would have expected some type of action by 10/24/21.

All of the other opt-outs that I submitted in the past have worked, but Checkpeople.com is the worst. I am a senior citizen and I don’t want to entice id thieves.

Max, Checkpeople has a specific opt out process and that does not include asking them to do it via email. Please click on the link in my tutorial and follow each step. As I mentioned in my tutorial introduction, sometimes it takes a while but my recent experiences have been positive. Good luck and let me know if you succeed. Hayley

        Thanks for your response.

To be clear, I did follow your steps 1-5 as outlined above, using their opt-out process. I got the confirmation email and clicked on the button, ‘Confirm Opt Out Request’ on 9/14/2021. I followed-up on 10/07/2021 using their confirmation email and the online URL.

I could start again with filling out the opt-out form using another email address, as you had advised Shawn.

I went through the steps to remove my information from checkpeople.com. That process includes confirming an opt-out request via a button click they send in a confirmation email… which I did. I waited the allotted time and then received another email stating my request had been “rejected.” The rejected email stated:

“Your opt out has been rejected. In order to opt out you need to verify you are the person you are requesting an opt out for. Thanks,
    Checkpeople”

Notice there are no links, faqs, help or contact information in the rejection email to use to better understand what else is required (aside from acknowledging the previous confirmation email) to accomplish this? I called the support line and was told I had to sort out the issue using email only; they could not help me over the phone.

I have since reported checkpeople.com to the FTC, FCC and the FBI. If there are any additional steps or assistance that can be provided, please do let me know. Thank you.

Hi Shawn, This opt out often takes a while to process but I have not gotten a rejection before. Try repeat the tutorial from scratch – possibly even with a different email address.

That said, new privacy laws allow for the company to request verification that the person doing the opt out has the authority to do it. Some sites are requiring an ID upload. When I do that I redact a lot of information: photos, ID or license #, signatures. It’s okay to give the ID because it’s pretty obvious the site already has the rest of the data on the ID. If there is something on there you think they don’t have, then redact that too. (ie, the street part of the address. They usually have that and DOB in full.)

Let me know what happens please.

I removed my info and the information for 6 of my family members from Check People earlier this month. It worked! We received emails within the week stating that we were delisted. I just verified this in their system and it’s true. Hurray!

To remove your information, scroll to the bottom of their home page and click “remove my info” under the “Get Help” list of links. Then follow the instructions (you’ll need an active email) and confirm your request by clicking the confirmation link in the email they send you. I used a separate email address for each family member I was delisting.

I too found checkpeople problematic for awhile – I believe they were involved in a lawsuit during late 2018. So I waited for that to pass before starting on my list of names.

If you submitted a removal request during the problematic period just email them at support(at)checkpeople(dot)com and ask “how long should the removal process take?”. Include in your email the date of removal request, link of listing asking to be removed, copy/paste info in listing (make note of any new name spellings – Google them as well). They will respond with the online removal process – reply already tried this before sending email – received following error message – copy/paste error message in your reply email again with the listing link, copy/paste listing info.

Takes time but it DOES work.

It is a good practice to Google each name/address/phone number on your list (correct/incorrect) and locate any new potential removal requests.
